At the end of 2019, there were 958 megawatts (MW) of battery energy storage on the US grid. By the end of this year, there is expected to be 18,530 MW—a nearly 20-fold increase in just four years. And more than 11,000 MW of new battery energy storage projects are already contracted for 2024. 1
Although the majority of recent electricity storage system installations have a duration at rated power of up to ∼4 h, several trends and potential applications are identified that require electricity storage with longer durations of 10 to ∼100 h.
“Today, most grid-scale energy storage projects have durations of 2-4 hours,” said Alan Greenshields, EMEA director at ESS. “However, 2-4 hours is not adequate to meet the needs of a fully renewable grid.” Founded in 2011, ESS manufacturers iron flow batteries (IFBs) for long duration energy storage (LDES).
It funds research into long duration energy storage: the Duration Addition to electricitY Storage (DAYS) program is funding the development of 10 long duration energy storage technologies for 10–100 h with a goal of providing this storage at a cost of $.05 per kWh of output .
However, there is growing interest in the deployment of energy storage with greater than 4 hours of capacity, which has been identified as potentially playing an important role in helping integrate larger amounts of renewable energy and achieving heavily decarbonized grids.1,2,3
