This article is part of the themed collection: Electrochemistry in Energy Storage and Conversion The increasingly intimate contact between electronics and the human body necessitates the development of stretchable energy storage devices that can conform and adapt to the skin.
The so-called stretchable multifunctional energy storage e-skin supercapacitors and sensors were composed of the middle layer of PVA-KOH solid electrolyte, two sublayers of silver nanowires (AgNWs)/MnO2 nanowires (MNWs) composite films, and two external layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
However, the relative low loading mass of the active materials for both spring-type and fiber-type devices limits their applications. A spine-type energy storage device consists of numerous interconnected rigid supercapacitor and battery segments, which are connected by soft linkers.
It is necessary to develop all-healable components, such as electrodes, electrolytes, current collectors, substrates and encapsulation materials, which can realize the omni self-healing function of flexible/stretchable energy storage devices.
For flexible/stretchable energy storage devices, the substrates play a significant role in determining the mechanical properties and flexibility/stretchability of the full device. At the same time, the integration of self-healing capabilities could significantly enhance the durability of functional devices.
Therefore, self-healing flexible/stretchable energy storage devices are desired to address these issues to repair the physical damage, restore the mechanical and electrochemical performance, thus achieving the reliability and durability needed for practical applications.
