Lower currents allow busbar connections with smaller cross sections, which helps to reduce the mass.
High-voltage cycling is a direct driver of intercrystalline cracking, and higher voltages lead to the formation of many irreversible dislocations and cracks, which is detrimental to the performance of the battery.
The first effect is dominating, which means that battery mass decreases with system voltage. As a second effect, increasing voltage requires more serially connected cells that increase the number of voltage-sensing channels and therefore the cost of the battery management system is also increased.
