The cells are connected in parallel to fulfill higher current capacity requirements if the device needs a higher current, but there is not enough space available for the battery. That device can use the parallel configuration to fit high-current capability in a small space.
For the battery pack with n series-connected cells, the i t h sensor is connected to the positive electrode of cell i and the negative electrode of cell i + 1 (i ∈ (1, n − 1)). Specifically, the n t h sensor is connected to the positive electrode of cell n and the negative electrode of cell 1. Fig. 1.
The selected protection device must trip in case of a fault in less than 100 ms. In case the fault current provided by the battery does not allow for the finding of protection devices, such as a Circuit Breaker or fuse, that meets the derating criteria stated in point B, it is hence possible to increase the multiplier up to 0.7.
A protection device must be sized properly so that the energy flowing from the batteries during the failure will not cause damage to the batteries or other components along the short circuit path. The protection must clear the fault in less than 100 milliseconds. The impedance of the line is mainly resistance and inductance.
The nominal current of the remaining battery strings in the parallel system will increase and the protection system must not trip due to this. The selected protection device must trip in case of a fault in less than 100 ms.
The protection circuit block diagram is given below. This is a High side protection circuit. The battery configuration is S4 (four in series), and a fuse is connected to the positive side of the battery to shut off the battery when the current exceeds the limits. There is BMS Monitoring every cell voltage for balancing and fault detection.
