The technologies that are most suitable for grid-scale electricity storage are in the top right corner, with high powers and discharge times of hours or days (but not weeks or months). These are Pumped Hydropower, Hydrogen, Compressed air and Cryogenic Energy Storage (also known as ‘Liquid Air Energy Storage’ (LAES)).
When the expected costs of congestion exceed the costs of investment to mitigate it, investments in grids or alternatives can lower costs to consumers. In partnership with National Grid ESO, Form Energy (Form) examined the economics of using energy storage technologies as an alternative to wires in order to mitigate congestion on the UK grid.
The only viable candidates for grid-scale electricity storage are Pumped Hydro (which has limited potential for further development), Cryogenic (Liquid Air), Compressed Air and Green Hydrogen. Batteries of any chemistry are not sufficiently scalable to the storage capacities needed.
There are many applications for electricity storage: from rechargeable batteries in small appliances to large hydroelectric dams, used for grid-scale electricity storage. They differ in the amount of energy that has to be stored and the rate (power) at which it has to be transferred in and out of the storage system.
There will also be a role for other, more efficient, types of storage. Nuclear power, and burning biomass (and perhaps some natural gas) and capturing the carbon-dioxide, may also play a role; however, these forms of generation are not well to suited to providing all of the flexibility that will be needed to complement wind and solar power.
Currently in the UK, there is 1.6 GW of operational battery storage capacity mostly with 1-hour discharge duration, i.e. 1:1 ratio of energy to power, GWh to GW. The maximum installed volume of PHS is 25.8 GWh with 2.74 GW of capacity, a much higher ratio. In recent years, there has been a surge in the pipeline of battery energy storage projects.
