You have already met these amplifiers in the Core Course. The standard circuit, if more than 60dB of common− mode rejection is required, is the 3 op− amp instrumentation amplifier shown in Figure 13 and this circuit is used in most ECG machines. ie the CMRR of the output stage multiplied by the differential gain of the input stage (since Acm1 = 1).
As previously mentioned, the electronic circuit for the ECG application is similar to the one described in Shawn Carlson’s Scientific American article. The circuit diagram is shown below. At the heart of it is an AD624AD Instrumentation Amplifier from Analog Devices.
Write a program that displays the ECG signal using a graphical interface for configuring measurements and a waveform graph. Once an analog input has been selected, configure the program with the following settings: Acquire the ECG signal and observe the waveform. You will see a signal similar to Figure 1.
Use, either, the Butterworth or Chebyshev function to filter the signal, which should attenuate at least 60 decibels per decade in the stop band. Connect the output signal of the data sub VI to the input of the low pass filter. This filter removes the extraneous high frequency waves of the ECG.
The double layer of charges of opposite sign separated by a dialectric constitutes a form a capacitance, say C. However, since the Ag− AgCl electrode behaves mostly as a non− polarisable electrode, the main component of the impedance is resistive, say R1.
As in all ECG lead measurements, the electrode connected to the right leg is considered the ground node. An ECG signal will be acquired using a biopotential amplifier and then displayed using instrumentation software, where a gain control will be created to adjust its amplitude. Finally, the recorded ECG will be analyzed. Figure 2. ECG limb leads.
