In this work, as a contribution, a decentralized but synchronized real-world smart battery management system has been designed using a Cerbo GX general controller with networking communication capability and cloud data processing access, four charge regulators, and a sensorized smart battery monitor with networking and Bluetooth capabilities.
The system used is a paradigmatic real-world example of the so-called intelligent battery management systems. One of the contributions made in this work is the realization of a distributed design of a BMS, which adds the benefit of increased system security compared to a fully centralized BMS structure.
As depicted in BATTERY 2030+ Roadmap of Europe, the ultimate goal of smart battery is to integrate multi-dimensional sensing and self-healing functions into each single cell . Signals from cell sensors are sent to the cell management unit for analysis, and the cell self-healing is triggered once malfunction is detected.
The result showed that the maximum temperature and maximum single-cell temperature difference of the battery module could be controlled at 39.75 °C and 4.91 °C, while the flow energy consumption was reduced by 80.80 % compared to the continuous liquid cooling mode under 3C discharge with an ambient temperature of 30 °C.
The transition from conventional fixed-configuration battery pack and modularized BMS towards the highly flexible and autonomic smart battery system can promise multifold benefits, including the high design/operation flexibility, strong fault tolerance, easy equalization, enhanced safety and life management.
