An attenuation SOH with energy delivered during charging is proposed. This model reveals the impact of increased internal resistance in lithium-ion battery packs SOH and only requires minimal charging profile information, such as charged energy, state of charge (SOC), and time.
The battery pack state of health can be defined in formula (1). (1) S O H = E c E 0 where SOH is the battery pack state of health, E c is the charging energy delivered in cycle c, and E 0 is the maximum charging energy delivered when the battery is fresh.
In describing batteries, a C-rate is a measure of the rate at which a battery is discharged relative to its maximum capacity. Discharge current is often expressed as a C-rate to normalize against battery capacity.
Internal Resistance – As internal resistance increases, the battery efficiency decreases and thermal stability is reduced as more of the charging energy is converted into heat. This resistance within the battery is generally different for charging and discharging and is dependent on the battery state of charge.
Some of the key variables used to describe the present condition of a battery are: State of Charge (SOC)(%) – An expression of the present battery capacity as a percentage of maximum capacity. SOC is generally calculated using current integration to determine the change in battery capacity over time.
For a battery with a capacity of 100 Amp-hrs, a 5C rate would be 500 Amps. A 1C rate means that the discharge current will discharge the entire battery in 1 hour. A C/2 rate would be 50 Amps. Similarly, an E-rate describes the discharge power.
