Germany and Spain in Europe are the pioneers of this technology. Solar tower power generation is a type of CSP that concentrates insolation onto a receiver mounted at a certain height on a tower (also called as the solar tower). The solar irradiation is concentrated by means of a heliostat field that surrounds it.
All the issues commented above make solar power towers, among other concentrated solar power technologies, a promising technology with commercial possibilities in the mid term. Better performance and cheaper electricity compared with other options seems within reach.
Since then, a lot of solar power towers have been built throughout the world for research as well as for commercial purposes. Spiros et al. believe that this was a result of the experience gained from the research activities conducted initially. Germany and Spain in Europe are the pioneers of this technology.
The authors also make the point that solar power towers are quite profitable in the 50–100 MW range. Likewise, the authors also make the case that of all the CSPs, solar power towers require the largest land area and quantity of water per unit electricity generated.
Even though four different CSP technologies (PTC, LFR, SPT and PDS) are being explored, the solar power tower based systems are gaining major attention as evident from the world׳s largest utility scale Ivanpah CSP systems (392 MW) commissioned in the USA in 2014.
Open challenges for the next future are summarized. Among the diverse technologies for producing clean energy through concentrated solar power, central tower plants are believed to be the most promising in the next years. In these plants a heliostat field collects and redirects solar irradiance towards a central receiver where a fluid is heated up.
