Operational experience Lead–acid batteries have been used for energy storage in utility applications for many years but it hasonlybeen in recentyears that the demand for battery energy storage has increased.
In all cases the positive electrode is the same as in a conventional lead–acid battery. The various constructions have different technical performance and can be adapted to particular duty cycles.
The lead–acid batteries are both tubular types, one flooded with lead-plated expanded copper mesh negative grids and the other a VRLA battery with gelled electrolyte. The flooded battery has a power capability of 1.2 MW and a capacity of 1.4 MWh and the VRLA battery a power capability of 0.8 MW and a capacity of 0.8 MWh.
Electrochemical energy storage in batteries is attractive because it is compact, easy to deploy, economical and provides virtually instant response both to input from the battery and output from the network to the battery.
For lead–acid batteries selection of the membrane is the key and the other issue is to have reliable edge seals around the membrane with the electrodes on either side. The use of porous alumina impregnated with lead has been trialled without success.
