As China shifts towards renewables and develops its world-leading solar and battery manufacturing power, Chinese companies will seek out new markets abroad. China’s involvement in the energy transitions of the Belt and Road is complex and evolving.
Therefore, strengthening the cooperation in solar energy trade with the "Belt and Road" countries is of great significance to ensuring energy security around the world.
Gu Yu, deputy director of the ministry’s Trade Remedy and Investigation Bureau, urged PV makers to seek cooperation with local companies in the Belt and Road Initiative countries and explore opportunities through investments in solar power projects.
Source: calculated by the authors based on UN comtrade database. Observing the dynamic changing trend, from 2007 to 2016, the market share of the "Belt and Road" countries in the export structure of China's solar PV products showed an upward trend, while the market share had dropped for all other countries in the rest of the world.
The results of the CMS model show that the overall competitiveness at all the four stages of China's solar PV exports from 2007 to 2016 is positive and the general competitive effect has risen from 27.18% in 2007–2008 to 91.92% in 2012–2016.
To characterize China's overseas solar value chain we coded and aggregated overseas project activities into three broad categories associated with the solar PV value chain segment in which the project falls, either upstream, manufacturing or downstream, based on the typology used in Kirkegaard et al. (2010).
