What the Future Has in Store: A New Paradigm for Water Storage calls for developing and driving multi-sectoral solutions to the water storage gap, taking approaches that integrate needs and opportunities across the whole system, including natural, built, and hybrid storage, to support many instead of few, for generations to come.
As noted in the World Bank Group’s Scaling Up Finance for Water report, companies play a vital role in driving technological innovation and digitalization, and performance-based management and delivery of water infrastructure and services.
It focuses on four key areas to catalyze financing and innovation for the water sector: establishing enabling conditions for investment; bringing in private sector expertise; diversifying financing solutions; and advancing climate outcomes.
Despite these challenges, the economic rationale for water investment speaks for itself, highlighted by the importance of recognizing and seizing opportunities in this critical yet underdeveloped market. In communicating the potential of water as an investment, it is important not to view water as a standalone sector.
Strengthening the interlinkages of the water sector with other sectors (e.g., renewable energy use and energy efficiency, resource recovery, ecosystem services, and landscape management) can also improve the business case for water sector investments.
