From the typical waveform, it can be seen that during the self-healing process, the voltage across the specimen remains basically constant due to the presence of the shunt capacitor, and the duration of the self-healing current is about 1–2 μs. Based on the experimental waveform and Eq. (1), the self-healing energy E sh can be calculated.
In order to study the self-healing characteristics of metallized film capacitors, an experimental platform was established to study the effects of voltage, temperature, shunt capacitance, film thickness, and interlayer pressure on the self-healing energy of metallized film capacitors.
The experimental results show that the parallel capacitance has little effect on the self-healing energy when the parallel capacitance is varied in the range of 10–160 μF, with the self-healing energy varying between 2 and 10 mJ, all with an average value of around 6 mJ.
It mainly results in capacitance loss of the capacitor component. Additionally, SH in capacitors is typically random. Even at the same SH voltage Ush, the SH energy Wsh can vary.
As the SH number increases, the probability of SH breaking only one layer of film in each event rises; Capacitance loss calculations need to account for the winding structure of the capacitor. It was observed that capacitance loss is nonlinearly related to the total electrode evaporation area.
These wide-ranging phenomena can deteriorate the performance and shorten the lifetime of the material. One approach to improve the damage tolerance of materials subjected to high electrical stress and operational lifetime is to provide a degree of self-healing.

Self-Healing in Metallized Film Capacitors: Theory of Breakdown ...
A theory of self-healing (SH) in metallized film capacitors (MFCs) is introduced. The interruption of the filamentary breakdown (BD) current in the thin dielectric insulation occurs when the thermally driven increase of the series impedance in the electrode metallization destabilizes the BD plasma arc. The interruption process can be described as a switching …
