Vanadium Flow Batteries (VFBs) are a stationary energy storage technology, that can play a pivotal role in the integration of renewable sources into the electrical grid, thanks to unique advantages like power and energy independent sizing, no risk of explosion or fire and extremely long operating life.
It is worth noting that no leakages have been observed since commissioned. The system shows stable performance and very little capacity loss over the past 12 years, which proves the stability of the vanadium electrolyte and that the vanadium flow battery can have a very long cycle life.

Techno-economic Assessments of Vanadium Flow Batteries: Performance and Value Analysis. Applied Energy, (Under revision). J. Electrochem.
Interest in the advancement of energy storage methods have risen as energy production trends toward renewable energy sources. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) are one of the emerging energy storage techniques being developed with the purpose of effectively storing renewable energy.
In order to finish the redox reaction, it also makes ion movement easier [ 57 ]. The production of protons in a vanadium redox flow battery occurs technically through two processes: the dissociation of sulfuric acid, the electrolyte’s supporting medium, and the reaction of water with VOSO4 to form protons.
Vanadium makes up a significantly higher percentage of the overall system cost compared with any single metal in other battery technologies and in addition to large fluctuations in price historically, its supply chain is less developed and can be more constrained than that of materials used in other battery technologies.
