1. Introduction Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) have been deployed to meet the challenges from the variability and intermittency of the power generation from renewable energy sources (RESs) [ 1 – 4 ].
Hybrid energy storage systems are advanced energy storage solutions that provide a more versatile and efficient approach to managing energy storage and distribution, addressing the varying demands of the power grid more effectively than single-technology systems.
These include batteries, supercapacitors, flywheels, pumped hydro, super magnets, compressed air, and hydrogen, which are used to store energy in various forms (Gusain et al., 2021; Worku et al., 2022; Zhang et al., 2021a, 2021b).
Hybrid energy storage systems (HESS), which combine multiple energy storage devices (ESDs), present a promising solution by leveraging the complementary strengths of each technology involved.
Hence, a comprehensive economic, environmental, and resource availability analysis should be conducted to make informed decisions about deploying HESS. Recent technological advancements have significantly enhanced the performance, safety, and scalability of various energy storage solutions.
