The National Solar Mission is an initiative of the Government of India and State Governments to promote solar power. The mission is one of the several policies of the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
The Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power has informed that in order to promote development of solar energy in the country, the National Solar Mission (NSM) was launched in January 2010 under which the Government introduced various schemes from time to time.
Policy and regulatory framework The objective of the Mission is to create a policy and regulatory environment which provides a predictable incentive structure that enables rapid and large-scale capital investment in solar energy applications and encourages technical innovation and lowering of costs.
To encourage participation of private sector and provide investment opportunities to set up solar power projects. To create a conducive environment for the growth of investors, entrepreneurs and start-ups. To leverage the inherent strengths of the state while developing new ones.
The list of schemes currently in operation to encourage use of solar energy at domestic level are given below. Solar Park Scheme for setting up of at least 50 Solar Parks targeting 40,000 MW of solar power projects.
The mission is one of the several policies of the National Action Plan on Climate Change. The program was inaugurated as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 11 January 2010 with a target of 20 GW by 2022.

In December 2014, the Government of India introduced a scheme to establish at least 25 solar parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects to add over 20 GW of installed solar power capacity. The Central Government provides financial support for the construction of these solar projects. As of December 2016, the Central Government has provided in-principle approval to set up 34 solar parks across 21 states. Each power project has a minimum capacity of 500 MW.
