This guideline provides general information on the proper management of waste batteries. Waste batteries are a contaminant under the Environmental Protection Act(EPA) of the NWT and must be managed as a hazardous waste. Storage batteries are a source of direct electric current produced by reaction of the chemicals in the battery.
Li-ion batteries may arise within waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), however, this guidance is focused on the safe storage of Li-ion batteries at waste handling facilities and is not intended to address the wider measures required for the safe management of WEEE.
The applicable measures will be dependent on the scale and nature of waste management activities at the site, quantities and types of waste handled and the prevalence of Li-ion batteries, either as acceptable waste (for those facilities licensed or permitted to accept waste batteries) or non-conforming waste.

Targets for recycling eficiency, material recovery and recycled content will be introduced from 2025 onwards.
The transportation of waste batteries to a recycling, treatment, disposal or management facility requires the proper classification packaging, labeling and manifests for the specific transport authority (air, marine, rail, road). Specific requirements for waste generators and carriers are detailed in the General Guideline.
