Home / Operations / York – Battery Energy Storage System In August 2024, Capital Power began construction of a battery energy storage system (BESS) installation of up to 120 megawatts (MW) of power storage, with electrical energy output for up to four-hours. Commercial operation of the York BESS is anticipated in August 2025.
On March 31, the second phase of the 100 MW/200 MWh energy storage station, a supporting project of the Ningxia Power’s East NingxiaComposite Photovoltaic Base Project under CHN Energy, was successfully connected to the grid. This marks the completion and operation of the largest grid-forming energy storage station in China.
Capital Power is proposing a battery energy storage system (BESS) installation at the Goreway Power Station (GPS) that would provide up to 40 MW of power storage, with electrical energy output for up to four-hours. The project would be located within the footprint of the existing GPS.
The energy storage facilities serve to iron out electric use volatility in peaks and troughs and, more importantly, facilitate the utilization of the country's growing clean energy amid its efforts to pursue low-carbon development.
The pumped storage power station in Zhejiang is not only a major project requiring intensive technology and capital, but also a critical measure in transforming the energy structure and promoting green, low-carbon development, said Zhu Gongshan, chairman of GCL Group.
The energy storage power plants help improve the utilization rate of wind power, solar and other renewable sources, thus promoting the proportion of new energy consumption. In the first half of 2023, China's installed renewable energy capacity surpassed coal power for the first time in history.
