Grip the capacitor low on the base with one hand. You need to maintain total control over the capacitor while you discharge it, so pick it up low on the cylindrical body with your non-dominant hand. However, with an AC circuit, you generally look at the response of a circuit in regards to the frequency. This is because a capacitor’s impedance isn’t set - it’s dependent on the frequency.
Discharge the capacitor by touching the terminals with a 20,000 Ω, 5-watt resistor across the capacitor terminals for five seconds. In the field, it is common for technicians to touch the metal part with an insulated screwdriver across the two terminals to discharge it.
