Discharging a capacitor comes down to connecting a resistive load to the capacitor’s terminals. This creates a path for the current to drain through and allows the resistive load to convert the electrical energy into thermal energy. Commonly used resistive loads are a power resistor or a light bulb.
However, if you knew that the capacitor stored voltage is not too large after confirmed it with a meter, you can easily discharge it with a small screw driver. Just place the screw driver tip to touch the two pin of the capacitor, within seconds the charge will be gone.
Short the tip of the screwdriver with both the leads of the capacitor. The capacitor discharges with small to medium sparks depending on its state of charge. Do this a couple of times to make sure that the capacitor is discharged completely.
Inspect the screwdriver handle for any signs of damage. Do not use any screwdriver with a tear, crack or break in the rubber or plastic of the handle. That damage could allow the flow of electricity to pass up into your hand when discharging the capacitor.
Hold the Screwdriver: Grab an insulated screwdriver and hold it by the insulated handle. This keeps you safe from direct contact with the metal part. Touch Both Terminals: Touch the metal part of the screwdriver to both terminals of the capacitor at the same time. This creates a short circuit and allows the leftover charge to flow out.
In fact, a properly design power supply uses this method to discharge the output capacitors after disconnecting the power supply. In this method, a resistor known as Bleeder Resistor is connected across the leads of the capacitor. When the power supply to the circuit is removed, the capacitor discharges through this bleeder resistor.
How to Discharge a Capacitor (with Pictures)
If the capacitor reads as having fewer than 10 volts, you don''t need to discharge it. If the capacitor reads anywhere between 10 and 99 volts, discharge it with a screwdriver. If the capacitor reads in the hundreds of volts, the safest way to discharge it is with a discharge tool, rather than a screwdriver.

How to safely discharge high voltage (> 42 V) capacitors?
If you are absolutely sure you will not connect the resistor across the capacitors of a power supply that is still turned on, lower resistor values may be useful for faster discharging. With 330 $Omega$, your discharge current will start at something like 320 V / 330 $Omega$ = 0.97 A, a safe value for most electrolytic capacitors.

Safest fastest way to discharge a capacitor in circuit?
The energy in any charged capacitor is equal to one-half E-squared C. To discharge a capacitor safely, make the discharge resistance high enough that the RC time-constant is equal to about one second. Example: A 500uF capacitor charged to 500V contains 62.5j energy, enough to blow a hole in a beer can. A 2kO resistor would provide a time ...

When you''re using modules, they drain from the capacitor at a certain rate. If that rate is slower than it is recharging, then your capacitor is "Stable." Otherwise, your capacitor will drain in the amount of time indicated in the Fittings screen IF you have all of your modules active.
