Capacitors exhibit exceptional power density, a vast operational temperature range, remarkable reliability, lightweight construction, and high efficiency, making them extensively utilized in the realm of energy storage. There exist two primary categories of energy storage capacitors: dielectric capacitors and supercapacitors.
This comprehensive review has explored the current state and future directions of supercapacitor technology in energy storage applications. Supercapacitors have emerged as promising solutions to current and future energy challenges due to their high-power density, rapid charge-discharge capabilities, and long cycle life.
While the MOF-based supercapacitors are drawing some attentions, other non-conventional energy storage materials are truly in the nascent stage of developments. This review culminates with summary and proposed future directions for product developments.
Capacitors possess higher charging/discharging rates and faster response times compared with other energy storage technologies, effectively addressing issues related to discontinuous and uncontrollable renewable energy sources like wind and solar .
Electrochemical batteries, capacitors, and supercapacitors (SCs) represent distinct categories of electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices. Electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors, gained significant interest in recent years because to their superior power density and exceptional cyclic stability , .
A symmetric device using PEO/PEGDME/KOH gel-based electrolyte delivered a maximum energy density of 28.1 Wh/kg and power density of 1.68 KW/kg, with 95 % cyclic stability . These studies highlight the potential of novel composite materials and nanostructures in advancing supercapacitor technology. 5. Applications of various supercapacitors
