Image Courtesy of SolarLab This solar facade solution, with its many shapes and tilted panels, fully leverages the design freedom afforded by the cladding system to create dynamic and appealing architecture, whose photovoltaic systems are resilient against partial shadowing, and ensure a long operational life, even in the harsh winters.
The special film allows almost all of the light through to the solar cells to generate electricity. The product was developed at MIT by the company’s founders, and has been marketed as a way to disguise solar panels on rooftops by printing a full-scale image of the surrounding roof shingle pattern, color, and texture.
The solar window works in the same way as any other solar panel. It contains cells of a semiconductor material that create an electric charge in response to sunlight. Wiring hidden in the window frames connects it to the building's energy management system to direct power to where it's needed in the building or to store it in a battery.
The real innovation lies in the design freedom offered: customized solar panels are no longer limited to standard shapes or sizes, ranging from 360 mm to 3600 mm wide, adapting easily to any architectural structure. They can adopt the following typologies:
