The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery is the predominant commercial form of rechargeable battery, widely used in portable electronics and electrified transportation.
The lithium ions are small enough to be able to move through a micro-permeable separator between the anode and cathode. In part because of lithium’s small atomic weight and radius (third only to hydrogen and helium), Li-ion batteries are capable of having a very high voltage and charge storage per unit mass and unit volume.
Extend the lifespan of your Li-ion battery by avoiding high and low temperature extremes. This is because overheating results in deteriorating the health of a lithium battery. Moreover, the batteries should be stored at a partial charge when stored.
For starters, lithium-ion battery technology consists of the following. Electrodes are the negative and positive charged ends of the cell. The electrodes in a Li-ion battery are connected to the current collectors. The Electrolyte is a substance (liquid or gel) that conducts the electric current.
Article by Akshat Rathi outlines new development in lithium-ion battery technology: the addition of silicon to the batteries. Now You Know video (5:10 min.) discussing the materials used in EV (electric vehicle) batteries and the mathematics behind electric vehicle adoption.
That’s why lithium-ion batteries don’t use elemental lithium. Instead, lithium-ion batteries typically contain a lithium-metal oxide, such as lithium-cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2). This supplies the lithium-ions. Lithium-metal oxides are used in the cathode and lithium-carbon compounds are used in the anode.
15 Things you need to know about Lithium-ion battery
Compared to lead acid batteries, lithium ion batteries are lighter, smaller, have longer cycle life, and are able to discharge to a lower level without damaging the battery''s life expectancy. This makes Lithium Ion batteries superior to lead acid and AGM deep cycle batteries for many applications, including 4WDs, boats, caravans and forklifts.
