To escape the power cuts of up to 12 hours a day – locally known as “loadshedding” – an increasing number of South Africans like Lalu are opting for private electricity generation, driving an unprecedented solar boom. At the source of South Africa’s electricity crisis are breakdowns and disruptions at its ageing fleet of coal-fired power plants.
The solar energy revolution provides a transformative potential for employment generation and economic resilience in the Global South. The solar industry offers a spectrum of job opportunities, from manufacturing solar panels to installing systems, maintaining equipment, and offering technical support.
With electricity shortages plaguing all parts of the sub-continent, a plentiful energy source that is becoming increasingly affordable to tap into seems like an ideal solution. Yet the rollout of solar power generating facilities has been very slow in the region. Most solar power developments in the sub-continent have been in South Africa.
Secondly, the lack of adequate infrastructure hinders the adoption of solar technology in the Global South [110, 117]. Vital components like energy storage solutions, efficient grid integration mechanisms, and maintenance networks are often lacking in regions with high solar power demand.
However, limited industrial growth in the Global South presents a significant challenge, hindering economic advancement and limiting sustainable development. Solar energy can help address these challenges by providing a reliable, sustainable, and decentralized energy source.
2.1.1. Electricity Inadequate access to electricity in the Global South hinders economic progress and human development [27, 28]. Energy issues or the lack of access to modern energy services is a significant problem in many regions, with vast populations lacking the benefits of electrification.
How South Africa is embracing solar power | World Economic …
The quoted power produced by a panel or a solar plant is mostly obtained under near-optimal solar exposure. And the daily average power generated is much lower. Energy storage also remains a challenge. Despite this, solar energy remains an attractive option. All the completed solar power plants are part of South Africa''s electricity supply as ...
