A safe, cost-efficient, compact and light hydrogen storage medium is essential for the hydrogen economy. Highly pressured gaseous hydrogen and liquid hydrogen storage systems are the conventional hydrogen storage systems.
A systematic search was conducted across various scientific databases and journals to identify relevant studies and papers. Selection criteria were based on their relevance to hydrogen use in aircraft propulsion, either as a fuel or in fuel cell systems such as Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC).
Although innovations and further developments in fuel cell technology, liquid hydrogen tanks, etc. are essential to achieve hydrogen powered aviation, investments into fleet and hydrogen infrastructure will play a decisive role towards commercializing the hydrogen aviation. 5.2. Patents in hydrogen transportation
Despite many years of experience with hydrogen, the development of a hydrogen economy will require a major effort on the part of German and European industry. To this end, issues relating to production, transport, storage and use must be clarified for a wide range of applications, and the corresponding infrastructure must be built.
Compressed hydrogen storage for on-board vehicle applications combines robustness and safety advantages. Hydrogen tanks are engineered to withstand high pressures, undergo rigorous testing, and adhere to stringent safety standards, ensuring the system’s integrity and durability.
The roadmap and market outlook for hydrogen technologies in transportation are discussed in detail by WIPO, the World Intellectual Property Organization, in their 2022 Patent Landscape Report . According to this report, by 2050, multiple countries (e.g., US, Europe, China, Japan & South Korea) will touchstone the “Net Zero Scenario”.
