China's largest desert solar photovoltaic (PV) base, located at Tengger Desert in Zhongwei, Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, has started construction, local newspaper Ningxia Daily reported on Sunday, marking an important step in the national development of new energy infrastructure amid the country's push for carbon neutrality.
According to a plan issued by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the NEA in 2022, China will build wind and solar power bases with an installed capacity of 455 million kilowatts by 2030. China's southwest can support both hydro and wind power due to its varied landscape, comprising rivers and mountains.
Covering an area of about 43,000 square kilometers and with a planned installed capacity of about 3 gigawatts, the project started being built in the Tengger Desert on Sept. 9, the Ningxia Daily reported on Sept. 11. The desert is China’s fourth largest. The project’s first phase will cost about CNY5.1 billion and have a 1 GW capacity.
China's wind and solar projects China has commenced construction on several large-scale wind- and solar-powered bases in deserts in recent years. Located mainly in northwest China, they have a combined capacity of nearly 100 million kilowatts for the first phase of projects.
Today, covering an area of 609 square kilometers, this solar power base boasts a power generation capacity of 8,430 megawatts, making it the largest in the world, according to Qeyang, deputy director of the administration committee of the Hainan prefectural green energy industry park.
The solar cell base is also a major accommodating project of a national mega project of transmitting electricity generated in Ningxia to Central China's Hunan Province. The mega project is the nation's first ultra-high-voltage power transmission channel with photovoltaic base in desert, and the channel mainly delivers new energy.
