According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s (BNEF) annual battery price survey, lithium-ion battery pack prices averaged $132 per kilowatt hour in 2021—down from $140 per kilowatt hour in 2020. Inside each electric vehicle battery pack are multiple interconnected modules made up of tens to hundreds of rechargeable Lithium-ion cells.
The above figures represent an average across multiple battery end-uses, including different types of electric vehicles, buses and stationary storage projects. The industry was looking toward a battery cell cost threshold of $100 per kilowatt-hour, as a signal electric vehicles were reaching price parity with fossil-fuel equivalents. Costs of nickel, lithium and cobalt—key supplies for battery manufacturing—have been rising due to world demand.
Figure ES-2 shows the overall capital cost for a 4-hour battery system based on those projections, with storage costs of $245/kWh, $326/kWh, and $403/kWh in 2030 and $159/kWh, $226/kWh, and $348/kWh in 2050.
