Unlike the OCV method, coulomb counting is independent of battery power fluctuations (which cause battery voltage drops), and accuracy remains constant regardless of battery usage.
SoC Estimation by Coulomb Counting is based on the measurement of the current and integration of that current over time. The State of Charge (SoC) of a battery cell is required to maintain it’s safe operation and lifetime during charge, discharge and storage.
However, it is very effective and provides the only accurate measurement of the Coulombs consumed from a battery. If the battery’s initial capacity is known and or specified, then the remaining capacity can be accurately determined based on the Coulomb count.
