These defects can substantially degrade the power output of the cells 2, 3. Among these, cracking defects are particularly critical, being recognized as one of the predominant contributors to power loss in photovoltaic modules.
Small cracks, breaks, and finger interruptions are severe defects found in solar cells. Some of the defects, such as interior small cracks, cannot be visually observed in the image with the conventional CCD imaging system. The electroluminescence imaging technique is thus used to highlight the defects in the sensed image.
Gridline defects also developed at the edge of the long crack, seen as dark horizontal lines in the EL images. These defects correlate to the printed gridlines on the solar cell which are engineered to extract the current generated by the photovoltaic effect and carry it to the nearest interconnect ribbon.
The semiconductor material is often combined with other components, such as metal contacts and a protective layer, to form a complete PV cell [24, 25]. In PV cells, there are various types of defects such as cell cracks, snail tracks, burn marks, and short circuits. Among them, crack defects often cannot be seen by the naked eye.
There are several techniques that can be used to determine solar cell defects in PV modules both in the manufacturing process and in the field. Electroluminescent (EL) Imaging is highly effective technique for detecting various cell defects such as micro cracks, finger interrupts
Unlike the detection problems of defective cells in the literature, a more comprehensive classification method is proposed to detect the frequently encountered faults in PV module cells. The multi-class defect classification is performed and the generalization capability of the proposed method is validated.

Photovoltaic Cell – Definition and How It Works
A photovoltaic cell is an electronic component that converts solar energy into electrical energy. This conversion is called the photovoltaic effect, which was discovered in 1839 by French physicist Edmond Becquerel1. It was not until the 1960s that photovoltaic cells found their first practical application in satellite technology. Solar panels, which are made up of PV …
