Photovoltaic solar energy development has, in many places, been emphasized on land, where increasing studies have recognized the importance of understanding synergies and conflicts between technological and environmental outcomes, especially those related to the efficient use of land resources [ 2, 58 ].
Conclusions The rapid increase in renewable energy deployment is causing increased competition for land use globally. This study found that floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) installations offer the ability to spare, on average, 2.7 times the area of ground-mounted PV installations on an installed capacity basis.
Author to whom correspondence should be addressed. Floating photovoltaic solar energy installations (FPVs) represent a new type of water surface use, potentially sparing land needed for agriculture and conservation. However, standardized metrics for the land sparing and resource use efficiencies of FPVs are absent.
First, PV will gradually withdraw on agricultural land. In the face of the strictest arable land protection system, PV project development should avoid competing with food and other crops for light sources, and comply with the national guarantee of arable land retention and permanent basic farmland requirements.
The centerlines, box height, and extended lines represent the median, the interquartile range and the full extent of the data, respectively. Boxes are colored by the underlying mean efficiency. The top three land covers associated with greatest solar PV power potential are croplands, grasslands and wetlands.
Solar PV potential fundamentally depends on the incoming solar radiation, which is strongly dependent on geographic location, but it is also well-known that the system’s efficiency depends on the temperature of the solar cells, and the temperature of the solar cells is a function of the local microclimate.
