A motor capacitor is an electrical capacitor that alters the current to one or more windings of a single-phase alternating-current induction motor to create a rotating magnetic field. [citation needed] There are two common types of motor capacitors, start capacitor and run capacitor (including a dual run capacitor).
The shape of the capacitor-motor is a cylindrical hump. In the below circuit, both the L1 & L2 are the two connection points where the electricity supplies throughout these points to both the start & the run coil windings with the start capacitor.
The role of the starting capacitor is to lag the current in the auxiliary winding, bringing these two currents out of phase. When the rotor reaches sufficient speed, the auxiliary coil is disconnected from the circuit by means of a centrifugal switch, and the motor remains powered by a single coil creating a pulsating magnetic field.
There are three types of capacitor motor which include the following. Start capacitors are very helpful in enhancing the starting torque of a motor & allow a motor to be On & OFF quickly.
Motor run capacitors are designed for continuous duty, and remain powered whenever the motor is powered, which is why electrolytic capacitors are avoided, and low-loss polymer capacitors are used instead. The capacitance value of run capacitors is usually lower than the capacitance of start capacitors, and is often in the range of 1.5 µF to 100 µF.
The features of a capacitor start motor include the following. The power rating of this motor lies between 120 Watts & 7-5 kW. This motor develops a very high starting torque that is from 3 to 4.5 times the complete load torque.
