In a battery the contactors are a switch that can be operated by the control system. They are essentially a relay. These contactors are designed to be able to break (switch off) the circuit under full load (maximum current and at maximum system voltage). There are two main types of contactors: Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC).
The contactor is one of the key components in an AC charging station and is critical for safety and function. It must carry the operating current and switch reliably, even under the influence of environmental conditions. This includes outdoor use and sunlight, which can raise the temperature inside the charging station.
Main contactors, pre-charge contactors, and DC charge contactors are mostly located in the battery junction box (or battery disconnect unit). AC charge contactors are likely to be placed in the battery power distribution unit which is adjacent to the onboard charger.
The pre-charge contactor with a series current-limiting resistor is in parallel with the main positive contactor and used to charge the initially discharged DC link capacitor before closing the main contactors to avoid the high inrush current which might damage the battery, power contactors, and DC link capacitor.
The motor drive, the heating and cooling systems, the DC/DC converter that supplies all the 12 V loads, and anything else that draws more than a few amps from the traction battery, will almost certainly be switched with a contactor. Contactors, relays and solenoids are all names for an electromechanical switch.
For battery EVs, another pair of DC fast charge contactors is inserted to establish a connection between the traction battery and the DC fast-charge equipment. The DC fast charging is essential for long distance driving and large battery EV fleets.
Application of High Voltage DC Contactor in Charging Stations
In EV charging stations, HVDC contactors play a vital role by enabling the establishment and termination of connections in high-voltage circuits.
