Porosity & Pore Size: The typical porosity of a separator is 40 percent. If the porosity is larger, it can be difficult to close the pores during a battery shutdown event. The pores need to contain the electrolyte and allow ion movement between the electrodes.
The battery separator is one of the most essential components that highly affect the electrochemical stability and performance in lithium-ion batteries. In order to keep up with a nationwide trend and needs in the battery society, the role of battery separators starts to change from passive to active.
Presumably the hole was created by the heat caused by the nail penetration. When spreading out the separators, we found out that the cells using PE16 and PP16 separators had 22 and 21 penetrated layers respectively, whereas the cell using PE12+4 had 8 penetrated layers (Figure 9b).
Thickness & Strength: The battery separator should be thin enough to support the battery’s energy and power density and have sufficient tensile strength to prevent being stretched or damaged during the winding process. Separator thicknesses range from 25.4μm to 12μm, depending on the chemical system, without compromising the cell properties.
Separators impact several battery performance parameters, including cycle life, energy and power density, and safety. The separator increases internal cell resistance, and the separator takes up valuable space inside the Li-ion, making separator optimization an important part of Li-ion design.
We report on a unique safety mechanism introduced to the Li-ion battery design to mitigate the effects of a mechanical impact event by limiting the current moving through resulting internal shorts, thereby preventing without any change in the open-circuit voltage of the battery.
