This research delves into the technical and economic aspects of a hybrid microgrid integrated with various components such as photovoltaic panels (PVs), wind turbines (WTs), battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and EV grid connections, situated at a specific latitude of 40°39.2′N and longitude of 29°13.2′E.
The base scenario consists of a microgrid with solar PV and/or wind, diesel, and battery storage (2 h), but no EV and no V2G. Each EV charging scenario was simulated using four EV penetration levels: 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Table 8 presents the simulation matrix for the study (all scenarios include diesel generation and battery storage). Table 8.
The results of the study show that recent advancements in EV battery have diminished the impact of V2G degradation and improved V2G availability. This results in a net benefit to microgrid operations by reducing LCOE. The key findings of these simulations can be summarised as follows:
Infrastructure to allow for EV charging at work, home, and other locations or where EVs may be parked during the day can help to facilitate this. High penetration of EVs does not necessarily increase LCOE of microgrids and in some cases a small reduction was seen, such as in the Solar microgrid.
Thus, connecting BSS with EV charging stations in microgrids offers several benefits in terms of operational efficiency, cost reduction, and environmental impact . BSS can help balance the load by absorbing excess energy during periods of low demand and supplying it to EV charging stations during peak demand.
This study focuses on the control of diesel generators and utility grids in a grid-connected microgrid which manages and evaluates numerous energy consumption and distribution features within a specified system, e.g., building or a microgrid.
