In the event of fire, the burning characteristics of Li-Ion batteries differ from those of pool fires caused by conventional ICE vehicles. Battery fires are driven by exothermic internal reactions. In the early stages of the research project, a lack of respective experimental data about the propagation of these thermal runaways was identified.
Electric vehicles utilizing fuel cells or Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries for traction are becoming more and more popular. In the event of fire, the burning characteristics of Li-Ion batteries differ from those of pool fires caused by conventional ICE vehicles. Battery fires are driven by exothermic internal reactions.
A fire test program on battery fire load, consisting of two fire test series with different focus and slightly specified set-up, was conducted. The first test series focused on the burning behavior of Li-Ion batteries in general to fill the identified knowledge gap in this field.
It was proven that successful firefighting of uncovered Li-Ion battery fires is possible and a matter of suitable design in terms of fire suppression agent, detection system and the installation of the battery. Climate change is demanding a more sustainable lifestyle, including especially the field of mobility.
A new fire protection method for dealing with electric vehicle fires is proposed. The fire extinguishing performance of the method is evaluated by full-scale fire tests. An interesting thermal runaway propagation mechanism is found in full-size lithium-ion battery packs.
A reduced oxygen concentration leads to a lower burning rate of a lithium-ion battery fire. Water based firefighting agents provided good cooling ability during the fire tests, though gas based agent were able to stop the propagation as well.
Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: Myth vs. Reality
Lithium-ion battery fires are emerging as a top risk for many businesses . There were at least 25,000 incidents of fire or overheating in lithium-ion batteries over a recent five-year period, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Within large-scale lithium-ion battery energy storage systems, there have been 40 known fires in recent years, according to …

Understanding the Risks: A Comprehensive Guide to Lithium-ion Battery Fires
If the lithium-ion battery is compromised in any way i.e. endures physical damage or is not manufactured to the highest standards, the battery can short-circuit, which can cause the lithium to react violently, combusting or starting a fire. To avoid this, the highest fire safety standards need to be in place and measures need to be taken to prevent lithium batteries from being …

Pyrolysis-based modelling of 18650-type lithium-ion battery fires …
This study presents a modelling approach for simulating fires in thermal runaway and here, it is applied to 18650-type batteries with LCO, NMC, and LFP cathodes at 100% SOC. The model assumes a single-step pyrolysis, where a solid lumped substance, representing the battery components, degrades into volatiles which are vent gases here.
