Batteries are set to play a leading role in secure energy transitions. They are critical to achieve commitments made by nearly 200 countries at COP28 in 2023. Their commitments aim to transition away from fossil fuels and by 2030 to triple global renewable energy capacity and double the pace of energy efficiency improvements.
The optimal decision consists in balancing total supply chain profit and environmental impacts. The increase in carbon trading price and decrease in government subsidy would drop the EV battery market demand. To address these limitations, a number of next-generation battery technologies including high-nickel, silicon anode-based, lithium–sulfur, lithium–air, and solid-state batteries have been developed. However, the energy requirements and resulting greenhouse gas emissions are yet unknown, which could impact their future commercialization.
