Applying hot melt glue at the right temperature and pressure, in the right quantities, and at the right compression level, will help to deliver an effective adhesive bond. The guidelines below offer an outline to help troubleshoot some of the most common issues found while using hot melt glue.
Typically, hot melts are formulated with polymers, to provide strength and flexibility; resins, that provide the initial tack, and plasticizers, to alter the viscosity and ease of application. Hot glues also include waxes to thin the adhesive, and antioxidants to preserve the adhesive at high temperatures during storage.
Cut two small bus wires (less than length of cell) and one long one (double the cell length). Glue them at 2-3 cm from the cells. One person applies the glue and the other the bus wire. Don’t try to remove the glue. If it is unavoidable, be very careful. The glue is attached to the fragile cells.
Hot glue is applied in a liquid (molten) state after being heated to the adhesive’s application temperature. Ensuring the glue is hot enough guarantees a good “wet out” of the first substrate, with glue able to fill small crevices on its surface.
I strongly urge you to avoid using any adhesive for solar panels. Keep in mind that flexible solar panels don't last long. You will probably need to replace them every couple of years. That will be a challenge with them glued in place. For rigid panels, the best adhesive would be M6 bolts. These are rigid panels being mounted on aluminium brackets.
Glue the cells on the wooden board. One person should carefully hold the five cells up while another person applies glue (glue gun) on the board underneath one cell. Do this for each cell. Make sure to place the positive end of one line beside the negative end of the other line (check with an ammeter).
