Greenhouses based on the usage of solar energy are separated in to systems: active (use separate collector for harnessing energy) and passive. In passive system, the greenhouse considered as a collector and its structural design plays an important role on absorbing the sun energy.
Due to transparent nature of the greenhouse cover, solar radiation has a significant impact on the indoor greenhouse specifications. The rate of gaining solar radiation depends upon the greenhouse physical structure and the greenhouse cultivated land area (floor area).
Our findings show that solar greenhouses should be designed regarding the local climate condition. For instance, the optimal solar greenhouse has the passive performance of 85% for the case study. This justified the application of optimization techniques for the optimal design of solar greenhouses.
Depending on the local climate and the bioclimatic requirements of the species to be cultivated, once the proper site has been selected, it will be necessary to choose the cladding material, the type of structure and the architectonic shape of the greenhouse.
The solar energy stored in the greenhouse’s soil can be used to decrease the required energy in harsh cold weather in winter. When the temperature of the inside air is maintained at higher than 12 °C throughout the year, the energy saving under Shanghai climatic condition was 27.8 kWh/ (m 2 ·year).
Depending on the type of greenhouse and climate conditions it is advisable that the ventilation area is up to 30% of the ground area of the greenhouse. The increasing use of insect-proof screens in the vents, to avoid or limit the entrance of insects, decreases the efficiency of ventilation. Collection of rainfall water must also be a priority.
