In a lead-acid battery, the plates are assembled so there is always one extra negative plate. The plates are close to each other but do not touch, which would cause a short-circuit. One set of plates is connected to the negative side of a DC source, the other to the positive side.
In vented, non-maintenance-free lead–acid battery systems gases evolving from the water decomposition escape though the provided venting system. An appropriate ventilation takes care that the gases are quickly removed and do not accumulate to a critical level. This is crucial in order to eliminate the risk of an explosion.
Technical progress with battery design and the availability of new materials have enabled the realization of completely maintenance-free lead–acid battery systems [1,3]. Water losses by electrode gassing and by corrosion can be suppressed to very low rates.
Lead–acid batteries exist in a large variety of designs and sizes. There are vented or valve regulated batteries. Products are ranging from small sealed batteries with about 5 Ah (e.g., used for motor cycles) to large vented industrial battery systems for traction purposes with up to 500 Ah.
Lead-acid batteries can only undergo a set number of discharge/recharge cycles before the chemistry is depleted. Once the chemistry is depleted, the cells fail and the battery must be replaced. Service and maintenance of the batteries is critical to the reliability and the battery life.
The three major contributors to Lead-acid battery chemistry are lead, lead dioxide, and sulfuric acid. Unfortunately pure lead is too soft to withstand the physical abuse; about 6% antimony is added to strengthen it.

You''re looking for a sealed lead acid battery. Specically you want valve-regulated lead acid, and agm/glass mat type can be useful (better density and longevity over solid or compound leads). Avoid gel-cel and starters, they don''t tend to do well in these conditions unless particularly oversized and that''s very costly for them.
