An overview and critical review is provided of available energy storage technologies, including electrochemical, battery, thermal, thermochemical, flywheel, compressed air, pumped, magnetic, chemical and hydrogen energy storage. Storage categorizations, comparisons, applications, recent developments and research directions are discussed.
Energy storage systems are used by a range of application areas with various efficiency, energy density, and cost requirements. This means that the options for effectively comparing energy storage systems using different technologies are limited.
Three forms of mechanical storage systems are elaborated here. Among them, the pumped hydro storage and compressed air energy storage systems store potential energy, whereas flywheel energy storage system stores kinetic energy. 3.1.1. Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS)
The large circles for electric-energy storage systems (capacitors and coils) stand out in Abb. 12.9. This is because of their high-efficiency levels and high costs. Because of their very low volumetric energy densities, they are located in the upper left. With energy technology, extremely fast reaction times result in dramatically higher costs.
Mechanical-energy storage systems vary widely in terms of their efficiency, energy density, and capital costs. Flywheel-energy storage systems have superior efficiency levels and energy densities. But like lithium batteries, they also have the highest costs in their group.
Batteries are often compared to supercapacitors for various storage applications and it is expected that exploiting their features (i.e., frequent energy storage capability without sacrificing their cycle) by integration could help address future electrical energy storage challenges.
