Additionally, in the charge and discharge cycle of the battery, the anode material undergoes volume changes due to the intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium ions. This expansion and contraction can lead to fatigue, cracking, and even detachment of the anode material, resulting in a loss of active material [16, 27, 31].
Over time and exposure to environmental conditions, the performance of lithium-ion batteries diminishes, resulting in reduced electrical energy storage capacity and power output, ultimately culminating in the end of battery life [3, 4].
Sustainability and Recycling Assessment: With the increasing emphasis on sustainability, the secondary use of aged lithium-ion batteries and the material recycling industry is gaining momentum. However, different aging factors may lead to variations in the electrochemical performance and safety of the batteries.
The high reactivity of the lithium deposits, which cause accelerated capacity decay, reduces thermal stability and lowers the onset temperature of exothermic reactions, thus decreasing the self-heating onset temperature of the battery.
Due to abundant potassium resources, similar redox potential to lithium metal, and low cost, potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), as one of the promising alternatives, have been applied in energy-storage research recently.
The results show that harsh conditions, such as high temperature, low temperature, low pressure, and fast charging under vibration, significantly accelerate battery degradation and reduce the thermal safety of lithium-ion batteries in these application scenarios and working conditions.
