Their incorporation into building roofs remains hampered by the inherent optical and thermal properties of commercial solar cells, as well as by esthetic, economic, and social constraints. This study reviews research publications on rooftop photovoltaic systems from building to city scale.
The roof-mounted solar PV is installed at the optimum angle for each latitude and is sun-facing and shade-free to generate maximum electricity output. The building rooftops are flat in design leading to the utilization of the entire rooftop for the installation of solar panels.
Public buildings are the main applications of PV roofs. The roof shape greatly influences the design of the PV system. The selection of BIPV or BAPV and of PV cell materials should be based on local characteristics.
Increase of the albedo of urban surfaces and building roofs, using reflective coatings, can boost the efficiency of roof integrated PVs and mitigate considerably the released heat in two ways. Reflective roofs present a much reduced surface temperature compared to conventional ones .
Gernaat et al. (2020) estimated that the global suitable roof area for PV generation was 36 billion square meters. This represents a potential of 8.3 PWh/y, which is equivalent to 150% of the global residential electricity demand in 2015. This demonstrates the potential of replacing traditional electricity sources with rooftop PVs.
It can be found that the use of crystal silicon cells in public buildings is still the main approach of rooftop photovoltaic projects, and the maximum installed capacity of single building has exceeded 10,000 kWp.
