Pumped thermal energy storage (PTES) is a relatively new technology that has become increasingly popular in recent years, which typically consists of the heat pump cycle (HP), heat storage system, and heat engine .
The round-trip efficiency is 50% in (a) and 110% in (b). Besides, the economic performance, including the total costs and specific costs, is shown in Table 5. Results indicate that the minimum capacity-based costs (Ctank / Esto) and power-based costs (CHP,ORC / Wcomp) are 132 $·kWh −1, 2385 $·kW −1, which are economically competitive.

In specific, the mass flow rate is 50 kg·s −1, and the inlet temperature of the heat source in the PTES heat exchanger is 85 °C. The optimization method and assumptions are consistent with Section 3.2. The detailed models and parameters in the 5 scenarios are shown in Section 2.4 and Appendix.
