EV sales alone are expected to increase from three million in 2019 to 26 million by 2030. This, along with the projected production and export earnings, and the opening of new lithium refineries in Australia, means we are in a strong position to continue to supply lithium to the rest of the world.
In 2021, Energy Renaissance based in the Hunter Region in NSW, became Australia’s pilot lithium-ion battery production facility. In 2017, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) produced Australia’s first lithium battery at its purpose-built battery testing facility, The National Battery Testing Centre (NBTC).
The universal shift toward a clean energy economy has lithium classed as a critical metal and Australia is fast becoming a manufacturing hub for lithium-ion batteries. Australia is the largest producer of lithium metal, producing approximately 50% of the world’s lithium as hard rock lithium concentrate.
But the battery minerals Australia makes have already been bought by battery manufacturers overseas, in multi-year offtake agreements. To get capital to expand battery minerals production, a producer needs to show the bank there will be demand for this product. It does this by selling what it says it will produce in the future.
The chairman and chief executive of the US-based global battery minerals giant said Australia was coming from a long way behind and faced an uphill battle to ever make batteries in the absence of a carmaking industry. Albemarle chairman and chief executive Kent Masters casts his eye over the Kemerton lithium hydroxide plant. Tony McDonough
Australia has strong access to minerals, producing eight out of nine key materials used in the battery value chain, and is the largest lithium producer. The nation is already a leading producer of battery minerals, which presents an opportunity to leverage this strength by accessing raw materials to move further downstream.
