Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is one of the many energy storage options that can store electric energy in the form of potential energy (compressed air) and can be deployed near central power plants or distribution centers. In response to demand, the stored energy can be discharged by expanding the stored air with a turboexpander generator.
Recently, a major breakthrough has been made in the field of research and development of the Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system in China, which is the completion of integration test on the world-first 300MW expander of advanced CAES system marking the smooth transition from development to production.
The individual vessels can be connected in series or in parallel to increase the usability of this type of compressed air storage. Such connections allow the pressure stabilization of the system or the extension of the system operating time.
2.3. Isothermal CAES Unlike A-CAES systems that store and utilize generated heat, isothermal compressed air energy storage (I-CAES) aims to limit the change in the temperature of the compressed gas, ideally maintaining a constant temperature throughout the whole cycle, implying a thermodynamically isothermal change of state.
Firstly, the architecture of distributed compressed air energy storage system based on regional microgrids is constructed. Then, considering the thermodynamic characteristics of the air storage device under constant volume and insulation, a cogeneration model of distributed compressed air energy storage is established.
The length of the compression chamber was between 2.00 and 6.00 m, and the mean diameter was 0.03–0.10 m. The results demonstrated that the air temperature and pressure increased gently at the beginning and quickly from the bottom to the top when compressed with a piston velocity of approximately 0.125 m·s−1.

Already at that point, the author proposed to store off-peak electrical energy by compressing air with an electric-driven compressor and storing it in a special underground chamber. During on-peak demand, the pressurized air would be reheated and expanded in the turbine to drive the electric generator.
