A special issue of Energies (ISSN 1996-1073). The special issue Solar Cells is dedicated to recent advances made in basic research and technology of solar energy conversion systems.
Organic solar cells have the potential to fill this gap and put us on the path to achieve "affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all" (UN Sustainable Development Goal 7).
We review several examples of how spectrally-selective photonic structures may be used to improve solar cell systems. Firstly, we introduce different spectrally-selective structures that are based on interference effects. Examples shown include Rugate filter, edge filter and 3D photonic crystals such as artificial [...] Read more.
We present a review of the emerging class of hybrid solar cells based on organic-semiconductor (Group IV, III-V), nanocomposites, which states separately from dye synthesized, polymer-metal oxides and organic-inorganic (Group II-VI) nanocomposite photovoltaics. The structure of such hybrid cell comprises of an organic [...] Read more.
Solar cells are devices for converting sunlight into electricity. Their primary element is often a semiconductor which absorbs light to produce carriers of electrical charge. An applied electric field can then sweep these carriers out of the semiconductor, thus producing an electrical current.
With respect to silicon solar cells, organic solar cells have a variety of advantages including being lighter, flexible and potentially disposable as well as having a reduced cost. Articles will be displayed here once they are published.
