Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are (usually) polarized electrolytic capacitors whose anode electrode (+) is made of a pure aluminum foil with an etched surface. The aluminum forms a very thin insulating layer of aluminum oxide by anodization that acts as the dielectric of the capacitor.
The lifetime of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is affected mainly by the loss of electrolyte as the result of diffusion through the rubber seal materials, which leads to a decrease in capacitance and increase in tanδ.
The capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors changes with temperature and frequency of measurement, so the standard has been set to a frequency of 120Hz and temperature of 20oC. The equivalent circuit of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is shown below, The equivalent series resistance is also known as "ESR".
The dielectric layer of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is created by anodic oxidation (forming) to build up an aluminum oxide layer on the foil. The layer thickness increases in proportion to the form-ing voltage at a rate of approximately 1.2 nm/V.
The anode of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an aluminum foil of extreme purity. The effec-tive surface area of this foil is greatly enlarged (by a factor of up to 200) by electrochemical etch-ing in order to achieve the maximum possible capacitance values.
These technical notes refer to "non-solid" aluminum electrolytic construction in which the separator is impregnated with liquid electrolyte. There is another type of aluminum electrolytic capacitor that uses solid electrolyte. The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor may be calculated from the following formula.
