Scientists have developed a battery capable of charging in just a few seconds. A team from South Korea made the breakthrough with next-generation sodium batteries, which are both cheaper and safer than the conventional lithium-ion batteries found in smartphones and electric cars.
The breakthrough comes just weeks after a team of researchers in Japan discovered a new process for mass producing solid-state sodium batteries. The new technology could potentially eliminate range anxiety by significantly improving the charging capacity of electric car batteries, and more than doubling the range of current EVs.
But, in a solid state battery, the ions on the surface of the silicon are constricted and undergo the dynamic process of lithiation to form lithium metal plating around the core of silicon. “In our design, lithium metal gets wrapped around the silicon particle, like a hard chocolate shell around a hazelnut core in a chocolate truffle,” said Li.
The 6C battery uses several new technologies designed to speed up charging. These technologies make the battery’s chemical reactions more efficient and reliable. Interestingly, the battery also incorporates a new electrolyte composition, which offers various advantages.
Traditional batteries have an anode to store the ions while a battery is charging. While the battery is in use, the ions flow from the anode through an electrolyte to a current collector (cathode), powering devices and cars along the way.
In a new development, General Motors and its Chinese partner CATL have unveiled the fastest-charging EV battery to date. The new battery, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, boasts an incredible 6C ultra-fast charging capability. The “C” rating of a battery indicates its charging speed.
