From the perspective of the vehicle manufacturer, Li et al. (2023) considered four kinds of joint EV battery recovery situations under a deposit-refund scheme. They found that a deposit-refund scheme can boost the collection rate. However, an overabundance of disposal fees will decrease the overall profitability of the supply chain.
Taking the deposit-refund scheme into EV battery recovery is a valuable practice. Different from other products, the EV battery recycling process involves remaining capacity, which determines the cascade utilization process. Although the deposit-refund scheme enforced on retailers has been pilot-implemented in Shenzhen.
This indicates that government reward and punishment will increase as the sum of the remanufacturing costs of retired power battery recycling units by power battery manufacturers and the benefits of secondary use increases, and the government will increase its efforts to guide the recycling of retired power batteries in the reverse supply chain.
A deposit-refund scheme has been pilot-implemented in Shenzhen city. This paper tries to explore the role of the deposit-refund scheme in end-of-life EV battery recycling by using the Stackelberg game theory.
4.1.1. EV battery manufacturer recycling model (Model M) The deposit-refund policy stipulates that the government will charge a certain amount of deposit D for each unit of EV battery retailed, and a certain percentage of the deposit F will be returned after the battery is recycled.
In 2014, the Shanghai government was the first to propose a subsidy policy for power battery recycling and stipulated a subsidy of 1,000RMB for each set of retired power batteries recycled. In 2018, Shenzhen proposed a deposit-subsidy mechanism.
