As demonstrated by a crystal set, no, you do not need a local power source to receive AM modulated signals (or measure the power of those) which are strong enough. However, amplification, active filtering, and many types of demodulators (for example, FM (with the exception of slope detection)) require local power.
You can receive a signal without a battery, but it has to be strong enough to drive whatever output device you have. It would take a VERY strong signal to drive an LED, not so much to move a very sensitive meter, and even less to be audible in a sensitive headphone. If course to be audible it has to be demodulated.
Characteristics of electrical signal sources in a chemistry analytical laboratory. In this case one terminal contains the signal and the other terminal is referenced to ground. This reference to ground can be modelled by an Impedance and a series voltage source. These are referred to as Common Mode Impedance (Zcm) and Common Mode voltage (Vcm)
The main job of a power source is to supple electrical energy to a circuit. This is accomplished in different ways depending on the type of power source. Batteries provide a direct current (DC) and convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Electrons leave the negative terminal of the battery, which is called the anode.
If a depleted secondary-cell battery is connected to an electrical generator of greater voltage, the generator will source energy to the battery while the re-charging battery will load down the generator (i.e. conventional flow entering the battery’s positive terminal and exiting the negative terminal).
The battery in an active RFID tag plays a crucial role in powering the tag”s operations. It provides the necessary electrical energy to the microchip, allowing it to perform tasks such as data processing, modulation, and transmission. The battery life can vary depending on the power requirements of the tag and the frequency of transmission.

Why does an op amp need to be powered before applying the input signal?
To ensure this, most ICs have protection diodes between the input pins and the power suppy and ground terminals. If you apply power to an input when the IC not powered, these protection diodes will conduct, and attempt to power the IC - and any othter ICs connected to the supply rails. This will cause current to flow along paths that the ...

When a battery is your power source, what is ground?
So when your power supply is a battery, it makes perfect sense to connect the (-) side of the battery to your system''s ground pin. Notice that this isn''t just a voltage reference though; it is also the supply return. In practical terms, what this means that the wire you use to connect (-) to the board''s ground should be at the same size as the wire you use to connect …

A passive sensor does not need any additional energy source?
Regarding the "additional energy source", this would typically be a battery or similar power supply. The word "additional" here means a source in addition to any energy provided by the sensor itself.
